  ROTARY  SHARES

Speech delivered in Raipur Dist: 3260

Rotary is an organization of men and women concerned with the welfare of the needy. In this war against poverty, illiteracy, ill-health and a multitude of concerns, it cannot make any lasting impression if it were to work in loneliness. Rotary, therefore, shares its concerns, its goals, its thrust areas and above all its philosophy with like minded men and women.

Rotary has promoted partnership with many agencies that have a common goal – welfare. Rotary has shared its concern with organization such as U.N, WHO, Red Cross and others.

Rotary has shared its resources, its man power and its global network with them to promote Peace and Happiness. Rotary has also shared its commitments with the Youth not only through its partners in Service – Interact and Rotaract – but also through RYLA, I.Y.E, G.S.E, Ambassadorial scholars and such other programs targeting the leaders of tomorrow.

Rotary has shared Rotary with the community it serves. Rotary also shares its programs with the senior citizens, business colleagues, professionals and other welfare associations. Rotary has joined hands with governments too for a more effective and concentrated action.

Above all, Rotary shares with its families. We are not just 1.2million Rotarians that work for Peace and welfare. We have our spouses, our children and grand children and our other family members to generate a workforce of over 5 times our numerical strength to produce a better and happier society.

It goes without saying that by sharing Rotary we are strengthening Rotary and strengthening our commitment and our resolve. Even one man or woman can make a difference. Most of the world’s great success stories started with dream of one person. When we compute the effects of the commitments of our entire Rotary workforce it is crystal clear that Rotary will be stronger, more effective, more viable, more visible and more relevant in the second century of our existence.

Let us, therefore, commit to share Rotary with many more and produce a gigantic task force that will effectively solve problems that, today, appear unsolvable. Let us strengthen Rotary and propagate the dictum -Rotary Shares.

The most important product of Rotary in fact the only product of Rotary – is SERVICE. Rotary is a great organization and the greatness lies in its service offerings.

Rotary is judged, however, not only by the service that is provided but the way Rotarians offers their compassionate helping hands. The best way to offer these compassionate hands stretched out to the needy is by SHARING the problems and their solutions. Service is not a one-way traffic – it is a person- to person interaction and if Rotary shares, the recipients of our service will not only appreciate but hence forth co- operate, co-ordinate and copartner our projects.

Rotarians form the greatest source of intellectual excellence and when this is coupled with financial strength, the only qualities needed to form an in destructible force are love, compassion, concern and enthusiasm.

When this unique combination existing at our service areas, sharing becomes automatic and the resulting joy and happiness make life worth living. It is only when we help other’s lives worthwhile that we live worthily.

Rotary is a university – a universal university that teaches you to love helping others and sharing their problems. You will graduate with honours when you have learnt sharing all that you profess to possess and spread happiness and help.

Faith is what Rotary aspires to generate and by sharing your concerns and your interests, you can even obtain a postgraduate qualification from this university.

When the night is the darkest on a new moon night that stars spread some light. Alone candle of help can make the biggest difference. Sit with the needy sharing their darkness, lighting a candle and spreading rays of hope. No person despondent and world-weary will ever miss your concern and love and generate a bright hope for the future that will transform him and you into eternal partners in the community.

I have seen communities that are so grateful to Rotary (and Rotarians) that they consider us next to God. Play God–always-by loving and sharing their sorrows. God is just another name for love, concern, sharing and caring.

If you can share the tears of the underprivileged we will soften our hearts, wash our eyes and clear our vision. They in turn, will witness our selfless desire to be of help.

Most of the have-nots are afraid to put their faith in the offers of help because many of them have an ulterior motive. They have a selfish reason to offer assistance. When they realize that Rotary is different, Rotary is serious, Rotary has no axe to grind, that Rotarian can share tears and fears that they give you total cooperation, unstinted faith and enthusiastic response. Therefore, never be afraid of tears that you share with others. That’s the best cleansing fluid-ever.

Sharing is the baking powder of Rotary – the baking powder of our lives. Without it, you are flat. With it you rise.

Rise in the eyes of the community by sharing your lives. and make the community know yes – Rotary Shares.

Sharing the troubles of the community, sharing its problems, sharing the trials and tribulations of a troubled community brings satisfaction to Rotary.  It also brings other rewards. One of the most common problems – especially for men and women entering their golden years of life, is the problem of loneliness. Rotary does not have to spend a fortune to solve this problem- in fact it does not have to spend any money for this. All that is needed is the mere presence of Rotarians amidst lonely people and give them a reason to be happy.

On a voyage by boat, Alistair Brooke, a sixty year old man asked a young lad if he would be interested in earning a few shillings. “Sure” said the boy. “What do I have to do?”

“Just wave at me as my boat leaves”, the lonely man instructed.

It is sad that many can’t buy love but for a few shillings – the senior citizen won happiness.

As boat sailed from thee shores, there were many people on the dock waving, smiling and some even crying. Alistair had a young lad who waved his red handkerchief and banished the feeling of loneliness from the heart of Alistair.

Rotary teaches us to reach out to friends, families and even strangers. Rotary teaches us to build bridges instead of walls. Mother Teresa used to describe loneliness as the

“  biggest disease of our time ”.

Let Rotary share the loneliness of men and women by converting the loneliness into pleasurable experiences and tell the community imbibe the friendliness of Rotarians.
