Speeches :
OBJECTIVES OF DGN TRAINING SEMINAR
Friends,
You are all flushed with success. Your District has reposed its total faith in your ability and power to steer the vehicle of Service in future. I wish you all the best for your year in office.
You are all seasoned, experienced, motivated and committed Rotarians. You have shown your leadership skills. That has fetched your cherished throne of Governorship. This throne, however, not necessarily very comfortable. It may be strewn with thorns. It may have some unstable legs. It may even be a little rickety. The true leader will realize that it is not a bed of roses. The need is to recognize the pitfalls, understand the weaknesses and even suffer some thorns.
When I was a young boy, I was playing “Hide & Seek “with my father. When it was
his turn to hide, I closed my eyes, counted to fifty, opened my eyes and began
to search. Even after a fair try, I could not find him. When I gave up he
emerged from behind a bush that was so very thorny that I never imagined anybody
would hide amidst the thorny branches. When I asked him “Dad, did the thorns not
hurt you? “. He replied “To succeed in what you have to achieve, you may have to
suffer thorns.”
Remember, discouragement kills. Discouragement in our age is reaching almost epidemic proportions. So many people are discouraged and pessimistic. Discouragement always kills It kills the present through regrets. It kills creativity. It kills hope and faith. It kills the sense of perceive that which is important and which is not. It saps our energy, kills our time, makes our company boring, wastes our efforts and makes us think in constant negativity. You must not harbor such a dangerous enemy in your heart.
Friends, you have sufficient time to give full attention to the task ahead, plan for your year of achievement and promote the ideals of Rotary. Service is our product and is in such a short supply, that you have to promote ways and means to increase the production of Service.
Rotary is teamwork and the success of your year will largely depend upon the team you attract. This team has also to be trained to deliver the job. This will be one of your highest priorities. You are all fortunate to have a galaxy of eminent past District Governors, whose expertise and commitment can be effectively utilized for the good of Rotary. Use them judiciously, effectively and lovingly.
As we proceed in the days in this Seminar and the Institute thereafter, I hope you will see Rotary at its very best. You will hear some of Rotary’s finest speakers in our plenary sessions. You will be led through a variety of creative techniques of discussion and instruction. Let yourself be fully saturated by the atmosphere of this Rotary Meet.
And if you do, I can practically guarantee that in the coming week, you will have a clearer vision of your role of leadership for your District in 2009-10. And at the same time you will be in command of the technique and procedures necessary to make your District an even better one in 2009-10. Make your commitment – that you will succeed in being a successful Governor. Rotary needs the very best leadership it can have in the year to come. And you must be those leaders.
Finally, I urge you to take full advantage of the elite of Rotary Leaders present here to increase your knowledge and improve your standing.
Good Luck for a splendid year ahead in 09-10 . Now let’s get this DGNs Seminar underway with full speed ahead.
Thank you very much.
